The REGENERATE (Heart Stem Cell) Trial at Barts Health NHS Trust is being led by Professor Anthony Mathur and is made up of three randomized, controlled studies funded by the Heart Cells Foundation (HCF), the UK Stem Cell Foundation and Barts Charity. It has seen patients’ own stem cells injected directly into the heart to promote tissue regeneration. The Phase 2 trials have focussed on three separate groups: patients who have just had a myocardial infarction; patients with ongoing heart failure; and those with dilated cardiomyopathy.
