Abstract
Random number generators are used in a variety of applications. In this paper, inherent process variations and random fluctuations in supply voltage are used to generate random bits; a compact Bit Generator (cBG) based on a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) which amplifies these inherent variations is presented. The cBG is a fully standard library-cell based circuit and due to its compact size, many cBG cells can be embedded locally in a design where deployment of many such elements is required. This results in a reduction in area and power with only a minor compromise in randomness level.
