Abstract
The space shuttle, two recent tests of the Soviet antisatellite system, and the burgeoning budget for the development of space-based laser weapons have led to increased talk of the prospects for space warfare. Often punctuated by illusions of extravagant spacecraft and weapons paraphernalia, these discussions usually take place without historical, strategic, and technical perspectives. The strategic value of space weapons is generally overstated and the risks and technological obstacles to their deployment trivialized.
