title = "Financial transactions between Jews and Christians in Alsace during the 16th century",
abstract = "This article explores Jewish lending and selling to Christians in sixteenth and early seventeenth century Alsace by focusing on three logbooks that detail the debts owed to Jews in three rural areas between 1560 and 1570. Although confession building during the late sixteenth century led Christian authorities to attempt to curtail economic exchanges between Jews and Christians, economic contacts persisted and were a key facet of the rural economy in Alsace. An analysis of gender of the debtors and creditors listed in the logbooks and of their proximity to one another allows us to trace the shifting patterns in Jewish-Christian economic interactions that resulted from local changes in policy.",
