Abstract
Instability in a system with a chemical reaction occurs at those values of the thermodynamic variables which correspond to an appearance of multiple solutions of the law of mass action. As a result of the first order phase transition, the system separates into several phases with different reactant concentrations. Several descriptions of the isomerization reaction are presented, namely, the model of a regular solution, the van der Waals approximation, and the lattice gas model.
