Abstract
Investigated the incidence of subjective experience along the sleep–wakefulness continuum in 140 19–48 yr old students. Among the altered states of consciousness investigated were the hypnagogic state, the hypnopompic state, the state of lucid dreaming, and the out-of-the-body experience (OBE). The hypnagogic state and the hypnopompic state were qualitatively different. Only the hypnopompic state was significantly correlated with both false awakenings and OBEs. The hypnagogic state correlated only with false awakenings. The OBE was related both to the hypnopompic state and to the lucid dream.
