Abstract

This chapter comments on Peter Schäfer's attempt to define the state of present-day research into rabbinic literature. It analyses Schäfer's opinion on the rabbinic text and its redaction and on the question of interrelationships between different rabbinic works. It explains that Schäfer considers these two questions to be different aspects of one problem. It argues that there is reason to doubt the redactional identity of the work and suggests that the variations found in the manuscripts conform to the hypothesis that there was one single work known as Bereshit Rabbah.
