Abstract

This chapter discusses the importance of the Samaritan Pentateuch for the textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible. It briefly surveys the textual characteristics of the Samaritan Pentateuch and its critical editions. Further, it introduces a new development in the study of 4QpaleoExodm, an expansionist Pentateuchal scroll from Qumran that has been labeled "pre-Samaritan." A recent study of this scroll sheds new light on the emergence of the expansionist tradition of the Pentateuch and the textual history of Samaritan Pentateuch, elevating the value of Samaritan Pentateuch as a source for understanding the textual development and transmission of the Pentateuch in the Second Temple period.
