Abstract

Did Faár al-DÄn al-RÄzÄ complete his great Koranic commentary Scholars have suggested that al-RÄzÄ's disciple Šams al-DÄn al-áuwayyÄ may have contributed to the final tafsÄr, but were unable to come to any definitive conclusions, partly because they had no tafsÄr by al-áuwayyÄ that could be used for comparison. In fact, we know of two commentaries of al-áuwayyÄ: A section of his encyclopedia which displays explorations into seven selected suwar, and some snippets of a different tafsÄr that are preserved by al-SuyÅá-Ä. These two important sources are described in this notice. We also briefly mention some first-hand encounters of al-áuwayyÄ with his master al-RÄzÄ, as they are reported in the former's encyclopedia.
