Abstract
Migraleve, a combination of paracetamol (acetaminophen), codeine phosphate and buclizine hydrochloride, together with a mild laxative, was compared with vitamin C tablets in patients with common or classical migraine. A group of 48 patients were treated during an attack. Fifteen of the 21 given the combination recorded a significant improvement, compared with only 2 of the 27 given vitamin C (p<0.001). A group of 33 patients entered a prophylactic trial of the same medications, taken for eight to ten weeks. Ten of the 14 patients given the combination exhibited a marked improvement in the frequency and severity of attacks during this time - compared with 6 of the 19 given vitamin C (p<0.05). No important adverse effects occurred. Five of the patients on long-term prophylaxis with the combination complained of occasional drowsiness and tiredness.
