Abstract

This chapter explores the geneticisation process of intersex disorders/difference of sex development (DSD) bodies in Israel. On the one hand, this process consists of the discovery of genes and genetic variants (mutations) related to sex differentiation and disorders of sex development, and, on the other hand, of the increased use of assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs), such as non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), in-vitro fertility (IVF) treatments, pre-implantation genetic testing/diagnosis (PGT/PGD), and whole exome/whole genome sequencing for prenatal testing aimed at regulating or preventing the future birth of DSD/intersex embryos. Based on a literature review of the latest genetic discoveries of intersex/DSD variations and on in-depth, face-to-face interviews with 15 Israeli geneticists and gynaecologists, this chapter will examine how the geneticisation process, which is a global phenomenon, is manifested in the local Israeli use of ARTs for prenatal testing of intersex/DSD conditions. I will describe three preliminary themes: control and lack of control of intersex/DSD bodies, PGD is preferable to pregnancy termination, and certainty and uncertainty in genetic diagnosis practices.
