Abstract
Although Chagall's art is not documentary, viewed in a historical as well as personal context, several of his paintings (e.g. "Graveyard" and "Event") reflect his reactions to both revolutionary and antisemitic events which affected the Jews in his native Vitebsk region. In addition, his attempt to gain a military deferment reflects the Jewish perception of the Russian army as antisemitic.
