Abstract
The critical conductance at the metal-insulator transition for a threedimensional system is calculated. We find that due to localization effects, the conductance G(= σL) depends on the inelastic diffusion length Li with G ⋍ 0·03 e2/h for large values of Li and G-e2/h for small values of Li Experimental evidence is presented in support of this result. We also calculate the value of Gc in the equation σ = Gce2/hξ for metals near the transition and find that it is not universal. Depending on the material, Gc may change by more than an order of magnitude. This accounts for some recent experimental results.
