Abstract
Human milk contains insulin in substantial concentrations and receptors for insulin are present in the luminal membrane of enterocytes. These observations led our laboratory as well as others to explore the importance of oral insulin supplementation. In this review we provide evidence that orally administered insulin exerts beneficial effects on the small intestine in health and disease, as well as favorable systemic effects.
