N2 - This article examines the vocalization tradition reflected by a mid-fifteenth-century Byzantine manuscript of the Mishnah, MS Cambridge, Add. 470.1. Comparison to other vocalization traditions, including the Tiberian and Palestinian traditions and the later Italian, Spanish and early Ashkenazic vocalization traditions, demonstrates not only that the Mishnaic tradition in Byzantium possesses unique features but also the greater affinity of these features to the pre-Ashkenazic tradition than to the Spanish one.
