The awakening of Jewish national art in Russia

Abstract

Studies the role of the Russian sculptor Mark Antokolsky, called here the first Russian Jewish artist, in the development and promotion of a national Jewish art. Discusses his relation to the Russian realist movement, forwarded by the Wanderers, and the encouragement of his work offered by the art critic Vladimir Stasov, one of the strongest proponents of Jewish art in Russia in the 19th c. Also describes Antokolsky's interest in artistic education, in particular the arts and crafts school founded by Savva Mamontov and his family on their estate in Abramtsevo in the 1870s. ;
