Abstract
Alkylthiol molecules, C22H45-SO2-C6H4-O-C4H8-SH, HS-(CH2)21-OH and HS-(CH2)10-COOH, were used to stabilize gold clusters, formed in a two-phase system. The gold nanoparticles were investigated by using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results show that surfactant-coated nanoparticles are indeed formed and the incorporation of a dipole or a terminal functionality into the surfactant does not hinder the self-assembling process.
