Abstract

A facile route is described to the dimethyl ester of (2,3,4,5-η)-(2,4E)-nonadienyl phosphonic acid tricarbonyliron (6_which is obtained in an overall yield of 36% from (2E,4E)-nonadienal. The stable sodio derivative of 6, when treated with sterically non-crowded aldehydes, gave the corresponding (E)-ene tricarbonyliron complexes in yields of 45-90%. Deuterium labelling experiments excluded any bond-shift isomerisation during the Wittig-Horner reaction.
