Abstract

Symptom reduction and improvements in skills for transition after psychodynamic therapy in young adults: the role of reflectivity
The study focused on the skills that are essential for a successful transition into adulthood and examines the role reflective functioning plays hereby. Young adults seeking psychological help have greater difficulty setting and pursuing goals; a psychodynamic therapy that promotes reflective functioning could facilitate the transition. The results of 50 patients show that there was not only a significant decrease in symptoms, but also a significant improvement in planning, decision-making and mentalization. However, the improved mentalization skills only had a predictive value in the male patients. The findings encourage the use of psychotherapeutic interventions to improve skills that can facilitate coping with developmental challenges.
