Abstract

Sympathetic cooling of bosonic and fermionic lithium gases was studied in a magnetic trap. A sample of 1.3×1056Li fermions was sympathetically cooled, using forced evaporation, to 9(3) μK, corresponding to 2.2(0.8) times the Fermi temperature. Fermi degeneracy and temperatures of 0.3 times the Fermi temerature were achieved.
