Abstract

An attempt is made to survey the problems arising during design, development and maintenance of a Statistical Information System (SIS) for sentencing support. The intention is not to supply the reader with a recipe for building such a system. The aim is rather to ensure that a future builder is aware of all the problems that have to be solved or in some way dealt with. The author believes that some of these problems have no solution at all. Nevertheless, he explains why in his opinion it is important to develop statistical decision support systems for judges.
