In 1846, Arthur Cayley defined a correspondence between orthogonal matrices of determinant one and skew-symmetric matrices. This observation was a starting point of a long (and yet unfinished)
story. In the talk we will overview its highlights, with a focus on the achievements obtained during the past decade and some open problems.
