Abstract

Results from computer simulations of the scattering of classical waves in several two-dimensional systems of different sizes and amounts of disorder are reported. Transmission bands and localized band tails are identified. The dependence of the localization length (in localized states) and the diffusion coefficient (in extended states) on frequency is estimated. The close relationship between fluctuations of the transmission as a function of frequency and the fluctuating and spatially localized intensity distribution over the sample is attributed to the resonant tunneling of waves through localized states.
