Abstract

The results of previous studies of lateral asymmetry in neurological soft signs in schizophrenia have been contradictory; both greater right side and greater left side abnormalities have been reported. The present study examined haptic sensitivity and neuromotor functions in schizophrenics, patients with affective disorders, and normal controls. Earlier findings of more neurological soft signs in schizophrenics compared with psychiatric and normal controls were confirmed; however, there was no evidence of lateral asymmetry in abnormalities for any of the groups. The findings were discussed in light of their implications for theories of hemispheric dysfunction in schizophrenia.
