Abstract

This interpretation is supported by the comparison of this ba’al habayit to donkey drivers. The donkey drivers carried merchandise from place to place. It is logical that they would stay with homeowners with whom they also did business by either buying their fruit or selling them what they needed. Thus, it is logical that the guest ba’al habayit would either take with him fruit grown by his host or that he would leave with him part of his produce. That would explain why the Mishnah and Tosefta chose this example rather than the example of staying in an inn, which was also widespread in this period. See Rosenfeld, “Innkeeping.”
