Abstract
Phospho-tungstate glass doped by Eu(III) was selectively excited into its vitreous or crystalline components. The 5Do → 7F1 emission consists of three distinct, relatively narrow lines indicating total removal of 7F1 degeneracy. Based on group-theoretical analysis, the holohedrized site symmetry of Eu(III) is most likely C2h (compatible with the conventional point-groups C2 or Cs) or Ci. The exceptional blue-shift of 5Do in glasses is at the same time rationalized by some EuO distances being unusually short.
