Abstract

Phospho-tungstate glass doped by Eu(III) was selectively excited into its vitreous or crystalline components. The 5Do7F1 emission consists of three distinct, relatively narrow lines indicating total removal of 7F1 degeneracy. Based on group-theoretical analysis, the holohedrized site symmetry of Eu(III) is most likely C2h (compatible with the conventional point-groups C2 or Cs) or Ci. The exceptional blue-shift of 5Do in glasses is at the same time rationalized by some EuO distances being unusually short.
