Abstract
The utility of using an w-hydroxy-substituted alkanethiol as an adhesive layer for the fabrication of trichlorosilyl multilayer structures strongly bonded to gold surfaces is evaluated. It is demonstrated that a second monolayer of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS) can be chemisorbed on the monolayers of 11-hydroxyundecane-l-thiol (HUT) on gold surfaces. This second monolayer of OTS has spectral properties indicative of a highly ordered, closely packed structure of alkyl chains.
