Abstract

During the last 30 years, I have revisited Fijian villages, particularly on the outer island of Kadavu. I am lucky to have had the opportunity to revisit these villages in 2005-06, in 2013 and more recently in 2016, to follow up on the first visit in 1982-83 during my doctoral fieldwork. This chapter has a number of aims which include: telling the story of changes in selected peripheral Fijian village communities; a comparative study of rural sites for a number of time periods; to explore the extent to which agrarian transition has taken place on the island and its villages; and to contribute to the research literature studying transformations in rural spaces in developing countries in general, and in Fiji specifically.
