RELIGIOUS ZIONISM: Tradition, History and Identity

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The discussion of the religious Zionist movement is divided into two sections. The first presents a historical review (1902–2023) and the second focuses on religious Zionist ideology. Religious Zionist ideology comprised several elements. Its two central goals included the establishment of a halakhic state and the creation of a new religious personality type. The movement endorsed a conceptual foundation that included: Attribution of religious value to Zionism and to the State of Israel. Redemption of the world through the redemption of the Jewish people. A messianic interpretation of history. Over the years, the religious Zionist community has often split and opened up to new modes and contexts of existence. Consequently, the meaning of religious Zionism becomes an important question, conveying the recognition that there is no obvious answer to it.
