Relation between self-diffusion coefficients and quantum equilibrium properties

Abstract

A number of approximate theoretical equations which give the molecular friction constant in terms of the average Laplacian of the intermolecular potential are compared with the experimental data of Naghizadeh and Rice. Values for the average Laplacian are obtained from experimental data on the changes in thermodynamic properties with isotopic substitution in nearly classical fluids. These experimental average Laplacians differ considerably from the values obtained previously by computation from the molecular properties. Although none of the approximate equations is capable of exactly reproducing the experimental data, it is concluded that one of them [Eq. (1) of this paper] gives reasonably accurate values for the friction constants and self-diffusion constants of simple dense fluids.
