    Abstract

Recurring reforms of the Israeli education system are examined in terms of curriculum, matriculation examinations and national vs sectoral orientation. The socio-political, economic and ideological basis of the changes in educational policy and goals at various periods since Israeli independence can be explained in terms of the need to build a unified state and the demands of various interest groups.
