Abstract
The pinning of Abrikosov vortices is investigated both theoretically and experimentally in an artificially prepared Cu-Nb layered system. It is shown that large spatial inhomogeneities can pin a large number of vortices in spite of strong intervortex repulsion and that pinning centers can absorb free vortices from the bulk. The important role of a potential barrier for penetration of vortices into the pinning center is shown. This process leads to the restoration of superconducting properties at large external current.
