Funding Information:*) I would like to acknowledge the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada whose funding of the McMaster Project, "Judaism and Christianity in the Greco-Roman Era: The Process of Achieving Normative Self-Definition", facilitated research for this article. References to passages from the following rabbinic works are by page only : Genesis Rabba (= Gen. R.)-ed. THEODOR-ALBECK Leviticus Rabba (= Lev. R.)-ed. MARGALIOT Lamentations Rabba (= Lam. R.)-ed. BUBER Pesikta de Rav Kahana (= PRK)-ed. MANDELBAUM Pesikta Rabbati (= PR)-d. FRIEDMANN (Meir ISH-SHALOM) When MSS. readings are cited, I have utilized either facsimile editions of the MSS., or microfilms at the Microfilm Center of the Jewish National and University Library, Jerusalem. This paper, written in 1978, has been revised thoroughly in 1980. In one sense, it is therefore the first in a series of articles I have written on the Patriarchate. In another sense, the revisions are the product of further research on the topic, and of comments I received on the original version (in particular, from my former teacher, Professor Morton Smith). Responsibility for the contents is, of course, mine. 1) See R. Papa's comment in TB 2) M. Rosh Hashanah 2:8-9.
