Abstract

Davidson is sure that their proofs ultimately derive from Philoponus, though neither thinker mentions "John the Grammarian" (as he was known in the Arabic-speaking world). This is a most welcome reissue of Davidson's highly praised book, first published in 1987. In fact, Davidson's first major contribution on this front was his seminal study of the influence of Philoponus upon Sa adya Gaon, published in 1965;[2] in the limited space at my disposal, I will turn first to Philoponus.
