Funding Information:
their successful application to organize the 2008 Grand Colloque ADRES (which stands for Association pour le Développement de la Recherche en Économie et Statistique). The principle of the Grand Colloque is quite original in the French context: it consists in the allocation of a research grant of 25,000 euros to a conference project selected on a competitive basis by the scientific committee of ADRES. This is about one half to one third of the amount needed at the time to organize a good international conference when travel and accommodation are paid for by the organizers. The application listed a number of international speakers who had accepted their invitation to come, a program outline, a draft call for papers, and commitments by other sponsors to co-fund the conference should the proposal be selected. In our case, the co-sponsors were one international partner (the World Bank’s “Migration and Development Program” at DEC), one national partner (the French Development Agency), and one regional partner (the Regional Council of the Northern Region of France, where Lille is located).
