Abstract
Distinctive properties of polyanhydrides make them as a unique class of biodegradable polymers. Constant drug release rates are expected from these hydrophobic, surface-eroding polymers. Degradation of polymer can be altered easily by changing various parameters such as composition, crystallinity, molecular weight, and pH of the surrounding medium. Tremendous research in this class of polymers resulted in clinical use of few marketed products. Based on the usefulness of the polymer, this chapter briefly discusses the history of polyanhydrides and various classes that come under this category. It also focuses on synthesis methods, biodegradability, biocompatibility, and toxic issues of the polymer. Potential applications of polyanhydrides in drug delivery, vaccine delivery, and protein delivery are mentioned along with their controlled release applications.
