Abstract
Political sociology is the study of the nexus between social and political life, focusing on actors who, as collectivities or individuals, exert influence on political power or are themselves the subject of such influence. The field is continually challenged by major social and political changes and in this chapter we consider how some of them are reflected in the study of political sociology.
We consider first changes that began before 1989 with the fall of communism, including some that arose in the distant past but continue to affect us today. These are the communication revolution; the challenges arising from race and ethnicity, gender and religion; and shifts in relations of trust between citizens and political institutions. We move next to changes initiated in 1989
