Abstract
Land use planning systems, worldwide and in Israel, are now taking into account environmental, social, economic and cultural developments. Planning is thus expected to solve issues related to the conflict between developmental requirements and the need of preserving cultural and natural resources. The importance of open spaces, in particular, is increasingly recognized when addressing environmental aspects, and planning decisions must therefore consider the special constraints presented by these factors. Over the years various approaches and planning methods have emerged, prompted by a series of concepts related to the priorities of open-space functions. Hence the purpose of this article was to review various models commonly used for the planning of open spaces and thir guiding principles, and to point out their main merits and limitations as planning tools. Once defined, these models can be presented by means of a comparative classification framework, according to their potential application, in response to the demands of contemporary society for open spaces and the conservation of existing natural values.
