Abstract

Personal names in Samuel-Kings and Chronicles in a ‘United Monarchy’ context were collected, analyzed, and compared among themselves and to Judean names from epigraphical finds in order to better understand the origin of these names. The study reveals a striking similarity in characteristics of the different name groups unique to Chronicles, indicating one onomastic reality, similar to that of Judah in the eight–early sixth century BCE. The characteristics of the names from Samuel-Kings, whether unique to Samuel-Kings or common with Chronicles, however, suggest an onomastic reality earlier than that of eighth century BCE Judah.
