Abstract

An epidemiological survey was done in cases of otorrhea with tubotympanic type of CSOM in children (n=100). It was observed that correct methods of breast-feeding, aural toilet and ototopical medication were explained/taught to attendants accompanying the children only in 34%, 15% and 6% of cases respectively. After these observations, in a pilot study in children (n=65), who were advised correct methods alone, otorrhea improved significantly in 89% of cases by the second week. The ways and means are discussed to maximize the benefits of such simple measures to reduce recurrence of otorrhea thus lowering the recurrent expenditure on topical/systemic medications.
