Abstract
Pleural mesothelioma (PM) is a rare aggressive tumor arising from the mesothelial lining of the pleura and is associated predominantly with prior exposure to asbestos. Due to the long latency period of development most patients present to the clinic at an advanced age. Medical treatment options are limited and prognosis remains dismal. Due to the age of presentation, the majority of patients are treated with chemotherapy although multi-modal therapy involving surgery can be an option. This chapter however, discusses the medical treatment options of PM as they currently stand with respect to chemotherapy and immunotherapy, and further discusses the limitations of each. Other sections in this chapter discuss novel therapies and/or treatments under clinical investigation in PM. Finally, we discuss the outstanding issues facing the clinician with respect to treating the patient with PM.
