Abstract

In this paper, we explore the contrasts between the distribution of personal names in Modern and Biblical Hebrew, including (i) the lexical semantics of proper names in Biblical Hebrew, (ii) rare examples of proper names with definite articles, (iii) place names, which may have the syntax and morphology of common nouns, (iv) uses of proper names as sentential predicates. We suggest, following Longobardi (1994), that there is a change in the predicate vs. argument status of proper names, and note the absence of explicit morphosyntactic evidence for determiners in Biblical Hebrew, suggesting that proper names could only interpreted as being of the NP type.
