Abstract

This is an overview of preschool mathematics education in Israel through a description of the triangular relationship between: (a) theory and academic research, (b) policy and teacher training, and (c) the practice of teaching and learning mathematics. Underlying the preschool mathematics curriculum and pro fessional development programs is the accumulated academic knowledge of early mathematical thinking and pedagogical approaches, adapted to the age and cog nitive capabilities of preschoolers (3-6 years of age). Two examples of authentic, extended mathematical practices of preschool teachers and their preschoolers are presented.
