Abstract

The evolution from threshold of the photoexcited Cu Kα spectrum was measured. The good fits to ab initio calculated multiplets in all regimes support previous assignments of the skewed line shape to shake effects. It also demonstrated that the only significant extended contribution beyond that of the diagram transition comes from shakeup and shakeoff of 3d electrons. The present study, together with previous 1S and 2p shakeoff results for Cu, confirmed the fast increase in the saturation range of the shakeoff probability with decreasing shell number of the shakeoff electron.
