Abstract

The word “market” may refer, as the corresponding ancient terms did, to a place where trade is carried out, or in its more modern sense to the aggregate of real and potential buyers and sellers. In the first sense the Greeks distinguished between an Agora, in which trade was predominantly local, and an Emporion, a center of international – generally, in Greece, maritime – trade.
