Abstract

In this paper we present the fabrication procedure, simulation results and the preliminary experimental validation of a new type of an in-fiber modulator. The modulator includes a Fe micro particle inserted in a micro-scale hole drilled perpendicularly to the surface of a single mode fiber and passing through the core of the fiber. The position of the Fe particle is controlled by external magnetic field. When the particle is shifted into the optical core of the fiber it scatters the light and no light goes through. When the external magnetic field shifts the particle away from the core, most of the light is passing through.
