Abstract
Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and absorption spectra of multiferroic HoFe3(BO3)4were measured in the region of f-f tran-sitions 5I8 → 5F2 and 5F3 at T = 90K. The absorption spectra were decomposed into the Lorentz shape components and intensities of transitions were obtained. With the help of the MCD and absorp-tion spectra, the Zeeman splitting of some transitions was found. The MCD spectra and the Zeeman splitting were theoretically analyzed in the approximation of the |J,±MJ > wave functions of the free atom, and using the conception of the crystal quantum number. A peculiarity of application of this conception to ions with integer moments was revealed and modification of the con-ception was suggested. Unusually strong vibronic repetitions of electron transitions from excited sublevels of the ground multiplet were observed.
