Luxury and the sexual economy of capitalism

Abstract

Is there such a thing as “capitalist money”? Is money in capitalism the same kind of thing as in precapitalist economies? Marx and Weber have shown that capitalism is distinguished by new ways of using money: new ways of organizing production according to money-related considerations. But as Keith Hart argues in this volume, the question of what money does is not the same as what it is. In order to inscribe the historical specificity of capitalism on the thing it uses as money, this chapter turns to another genealogy of modern economy, Werner Sombart’s Luxury and Capitalism
