Loss Reduction and Voltage Profile Improvement in Utility Grid Using Optimal Restructuring of Transmission Network

Abstract

This paper introduced the concept of network re-structuring to reduce the transmission losses and improvement of voltage profile in the practical transmission utility network. Network restructuring is achieved by creation of a new 400kV GSS and transmission lines rated at voltage levels of 400kV and 220kV to provide new transmission corridors which reduces the loading on the overloaded transmission lines and transformers. Active power loss minimization index (PMLI) and total voltage deviation improvement index (VDII) are designed to evaluate effectiveness of the proposed network restructuring. Payback period is also computed to find out the time period for recovery of the investments incurred on network restructuring. Study is performed using the existing transmission network for base case scenario and proposed case scenario considering the proposed 400kV GSS and associated transmission system in the MATLAB software.
