Abstract

Military ties have always constituted an essential ingredient in the overall strategic relationship between the United States and Israel. The alliance between the two countries, although rooted in a confluence of cultural affinities and geostrategic interests, has been cemented by the severely practical steps taken to ensure that their armed forces enjoy battlefield superiority over potential foes. In this reading, policy pronouncements and verbal guarantees, for all their symbolic importance, provide observers of the US-Israeli relationship with little more than a general framework for the analysis of its dynamics. The true barometer of its health has always been more mundane: in which fields, to what extent, and how frequently have Israeli and US armed forces cooperated to improve their war-fighting capabilities?.
